The American painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967) captured the bleakness and the loneliness of certain
aspects of American life. Many of his best-known paintings are of New York City urban scenes with a stark,
eerie quality empty streets and semi-deserted cinemas, restaurants, and offices. Indeed, his most famous
work, Nighthawks, portrays an all-night diner occupied by a few customers, isolated from one another and
harshly lit by electric lights.
