For millions of people, working nine-to-five for a single employer or being on the payroll is no longer a reality. Instead, they balance various income streams and work independently, job-by-job. This is sometimes referred to as the "gig economy." Gig work refers to the use of digital platforms to connect freelancers with customers to provide short-term services or asset-sharing. Examples include ride-hailing apps and food delivery apps, as well as on-demand service marketplaces, like TaskRabbit and Thumbtack, where freelance workers can respond to project-based, short-term job postings. There is increasing debate about whether or not this kind of career is good for workers.
