Albuterol (also known as salbutamol) is a drug that affects beta-2 adrenergic receptors to relax bronchial smooth muscle, increasing air flow to the lungs. It is a short-acting drug used in inhalers for acute treatment of shortness of breath and wheezing caused by breathing conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
