Sheehan syndrome, also known as postpartum hypopituitarism (decreased functioning of the pituitary gland) or postpartum pituitary necrosis, is caused by necrosis due to blood loss and hypovolemic shock during and after childbirth. Sheehan syndrome can be associated with secondary adrenal insufficiency, similar to Addison’s disease.
